Overview of UBCMS Sites

Choosing to build your site in the UB Content Management System (UBCMS) provides you with a professionally designed, flexible, UB-branded website. But that's just the start.

The UBCMS hosts websites for university departments and centers as well as some key service areas (e.g. 1 Capen, Student Life Gateway)..

Every UBCMS site includes:

  • Public URL - Usually something like http://school.buffalo.edu or http://www.buffalo.edu/service.
  • Account and Role Management - Control who has access to edit your site. You can give each team member specific access rights matched to his or her role on your Web team.
  • Choice of Color Scheme and Structure - Several options are available in the UBCMS. University Communications can work with you to help you choose the design that's right for your unit.
  • Authoring Tool - The centerpiece of the UBCMS is the authoring tool itself, where your Web team creates and reviews content. Because the authoring tool is a Web application, your team can work on your site anywhere there is access to the Web. The code-free, drag-and-drop interface puts creating pages, forms, automated photo slideshows and dynamic menus all just a few clicks away.
  • Helpful "Placeholder" Text - Before you ever touch your site, it will be filled with text: a mix of suggestions for what content might be presented on a given page, and Latin "Lorem Ipsum" text to demonstrate certain page formats. Read the suggestions to guide you when planning your content, but also consult the training and planning materials provided in the other sections of this site.
  • Shared Content - A Shared Content directory allows your team to store pieces of content that may be re-used across various pages (such as forms or commonly repeated instructions). There are also University-Wide Shared Content and Authoritative Shared Content directories which any site may access to present up-to-the-minute, approved information (such as tuition). Be sure to tag your shared content to aid others in finding what they need when they use it.
  • Digital Assets Manager (DAM) - A Digital Assets Manager is built in to the UBCMS interface. This tool allows you to upload, store, and organize photos, documents, videos, and other files for use on your site.
