Internal links act unexpectedly in Preview mode (e.g. 'open in new window')

Internal links (e.g. site navigation) may load unexpectedly in Preview mode.

Reviewed December 20, 2022

The Issue

We have observed 'unexpected behavior' when links to other parts of the UBCMS load in a new tab while in Author's Preview mode.

This can happen when a link is set to 'open in new window' or when the author intentionally loads it in a new browser tab or window using keyboard shortcuts such as Control- or Shift-click or right-click + 'open in...'.

While the pages load completely, they do not include the Edit Console toolbar and also lack 'editor.html/' in the URL ("https://ubcms-author.buffalo.edu/content..."). As a result, they can not be modified further.

Workaround

We believe this is 'normal behavior', equivalent to 'View as Published' (which also loads the current page in a new tab).

As a best practice, to successfully view or edit other pages within your site, always open the link within the same tab.

As a workaround, If you do load a new page without the Edit Console toolbar, manually insert "editor.html/" into the browser location bar so that the URL becomes "https://ubcms-author.buffalo.edu/editor.html/content..."

Your live site will not be effected by this behavior.
