On This Page Component

Showcases the On This Page component. [2:31]

Two options for completing this exercise...
  1. Request a Self-Paced account on the Training Server. Then just follow the instructions as is.
  2. If you already have access to the main Author Server, adapt the instructions to fit your own site.

Scope

We built this component to help you easily create a table of contents on your page. It automatically lists all of the headings on the page, and each entry in the index links down to that targeted heading. The component is automatically updated whenever you add, modify, or remove one of these headings.

Instructions

1. Log into the UBCMS.

2. Open the Sites Console and navigate to your site; e.g. Sites + Self-Paced Training + {your site}.

3. Choose a page on your site that already has several subheadings (e.g. UB's Campuses).

4. Select that page and click Open in the Commands Menu that now appears.

5. To add a component...

  • Click the Toggle Side Panel button in the upper left of the window.
  • Switch to the Component Browser.
  • Components are listed alphabetically. Or type part of its title and click Enter.
  • Find your desired component and drag it onto the page.

6. Select the component, then click the wrench icon to Configure it.

7. Enter a Header (title). By default it will be blank.

8. Choose a Heading Level . 'Heading Two' is the most common subheading size on a page.

9. Click the checkmark icon when you are done. (The 'X' cancels your changes.)

10. Study the results and click one of the entries. You should jump down the page. If you don't, try refreshing the page.

11. Change the text in one of the headings then refresh the page and check if the index has been updated.

Note: when this component is placed on a Shared Content page, it will not display the page's headings. Instead, it will display "There are no links to display in this On This Page component." Don't be alarmed. Provided you have selected a size of heading that is present on your page, the component will act 'normally' once the Shared Content page is placed on a regular Web page, and will display all of those headings from your Shared Content page, as well as any of the same size on the main host page.
