Recommended Navigation

In your navigation, use clear labels that are intuitive to your audience. Be consistent by using the same language for navigation across your unit and, as appropriate, across the university.

Academic Unit Navigation

Our recommendation does not limit the number of categories, although depending on the template you select and the length of the words you choose, most likely you will be limited to your top five or six categories, which should be presented in the following order:

Main Categories (Topic-based)

  • About Us (includes a brief statement of purpose as a sub-page)
  • Academics (or Education and Training)
  • Research
  • Faculty, with names searchable:
    • alphabetically
    • by research interest
    • by department (if a school or college)
    • search faculty
  • News and Events

Secondary Categories (Task-based)

  • Apply Now
  • Support Us
  • Contact Us

Administrative Unit Navigation

The navigation must serve the customers’ varying needs for these sites. Minimally, the website should include navigation for the following:

Main Categories (Topic-based)

  • About Us (or if a department, about department, e.g. About Pediatrics) includes a brief statement of purpose as a sub-page
  • products of the unit (e.g. services, procedures, policies, branding, directions)
  • News and Events (e.g. calendar, service changes, alerts)

Secondary Categories (Task-based)

  • Support Us (if applicable)
  • Contact Us
