Using This Component

This component has one tab.

Unlike a site-wide search, it does not have to be placed in your site's header and provides its own search box. Search results are by default displayed on that same page, or the component can be configured to display the results link on another 'search results' page. Also this component can be configured to search just part of your site, and you can even have more than one search on a page..

This search works in author but is only searching PUBLISHED content. It also will not find secure or hidden content (a page that is completely hidden from the navigation).

Some components do not 'play nicely' with the search. For example, a return that finds a phrase in a Collapsible Content Container will not load with that container open.

When someone tries to load a non-existent page, they land on a '404 page'.  Custom 404 pages are possible.

Technical Restrictions

  1. To get the complete results for your site, leave off as much as possible for Site Filter. Do NOT include http:// or a slash at the end. And for 'www.buffalo.edu/site', try the results without the 'www.' prefix.
  2. This search works in author but is only searching PUBLISHED content. It also will not find secure or hidden content.
  3. The Site filter must be provided with a published and publicly visible page (not a secure page, or a page that is completely hidden from the navigation).
  4. Also note the Additional Considerations on the Search overview.

Configure - Main Settings

Click the wrench icon to 'configure' these settings.

Search Tab

  • Search box label - Add additional instructions to appear above the search box on the results page itself.
    • Leave blank for the default "Enter a keyword to search websites."
  • Site filter - Limit search results to the desired URL.
    • Here you must enter your website's actual URL, WITHOUT the http:// or https:// prefix:
      • e.g. www.buffalo.edu/president
      • e.g. pharmacy.buffalo.edu
    • The Site filter must be provided with the URL of a published and publicly visible page or it will not find any results.
    • The filter will match longer URLs that contain your URL pattern. For example, if you specify 'mgt.buffalo.edu', the search will also index 'docmgt.buffalo.edu'. To prevent that behavior, exclude the undesired pattern as follows (make sure there is no space around the comma) mgt.buffalo.edu,-docmgt.buffalo.edu.
  • Search profile - Leave blank to use ubcms-default.
  • Results page - Specify a preferred location to house the search results.
    • By default the results will appear on the same page as the search box, immediately below the component.

To get complete results for your site, keep Site Filter as simple as possible. Omit http:// at the beginning. Remove any slash at the end. And for 'www.buffalo.edu/site', try the results with and without the 'www.' prefix and use whichever works best.
