Overview

When UBCMS pages are shared to social media, the resulting post pulls the page's title, descriptive text plus an image. These will be pulled from the current page but can be set specially in page Properties in the Social tab. The image is defined by the 'Social image from' setting.

If the 'Social image from' setting is not defined for the current page, the social image is determined using these Selection Rules. (Regular pages and Shared Content are treated slightly differently.)

Selection Rules

The following rules are applied.

  • Shared Content pages created using the News Article, Faces & Voices, or Faculty Profile templates
(other shared content pages are treated like regular pages)
    1. The page's Teaser image will be used first, as set on the page or in Properties.
    2. If no Teaser image has been set, the first regular image on the page will be used.
    3. If no Teaser image or page images are available, a UB logo will be used.

  • Regular webpages as well as Shared Content pages not created using the News Article, Faces & Voices, or Faculty Profile templates
    1. The page's Social image will be used first, as set in page Properties.
    2. If no Social image has been set, the parent page's Social image will be used.
(Inheritance is applied, all the way up to the homepage.)
    3. If no Social image is available, a UB logo will be used.

  • Host pages are treated specially
    • If the webpage is being used to host multiple pages from shared content, the host page takes priority and regular webpage rules apply.
    • If the webpage is being used to host one shared content page, the hosted page takes priority and Shared Content page selection rules apply (based on the hosted page).
Don't be surprised to see the UB logo

If you aren't in the habit of setting specific images, the share will usually default to the UBCMS-wide standard, which is our UB logo.

Preview

You are also provided the opportunity to preview your setup.

  • Facebook Dev Tools
    • Sharing Debugger lets you preview how your content will look when it's shared to Facebook and debug any issues with your Open Graph tags. Log into Facebook to use this tool.
  • X Dev Tools
    • Use the composer in the client to confirm the preview. Start to create a new X by pasting in the link. The preview renders automatically if the URL has appropriate card metadata. If the preview is not satisfactory, you can troubleshoot.
